Management in a Collective Impact Partnership
Key Terms in the Management and Communication of a Collective Impact Partnership

    (Working, n.d.)
Working Group: Sub-groups reporting to the Steering Committee that help choose and implement strategies, engage community members, and track progress towards goals. Members are often relevant subject matter or community experts (Collective, n.d.)..
Steering Committee: a group of advisors, stakeholders, or subject matter experts who offer guidance, give advice on important issues, and provide direction. That direction may come in the form of helping formulate business policies or procedures, offering insight on finances or marketing, or even making decisions to guide a particular project from start to completion. In short, a steering committee does exactly what its name suggests: steers a project or a business toward success (Steering, n.d.).
Management Strategies: A series of techniques for controlling and directing a business to achieve a set of predetermined goals. They include strategies for goal-setting, leadership, business administration and operational activities.

Three Management Strategies You Can Use Today For Higher Team Performance
    (Ready 2016)

    1) A Clear Reason Why- Give employees the big picture of how their work and responsibilities are going to make an impact, large or small.  Share the big picture around these concepts:

    • Why is this project important, what is the opportunity?
    • How will the project create value for customers?
    • How will it create value for the company?
    • How does my workday connect to the wider world outside of the office?
    • How does the work lead to more of what the employees want in their lives?

    2) Evoke curiosity - Instead of saying “Do this, this way”, ask every employee the question: “How can we best accomplish this? What do you think?” “I wonder what would happen if we did this?” Even if you already have a good idea of what needs to be done, an inclusive conversation will take you and your products to unexpected places.

    3) Trust and empower - Allow curiosity and engagement to unfold. As employees demonstrate engagement and capability, allow them to spread their wings and have more and more control of their work.

6 Steps to Designing a Partnership or Collaboration (Finkel, n.d.)

    1. Establish a common understanding of the goals you are trying to achieve.
    2. Give each agency/organization roles and responsibilities that are aligned with their interests and capacity.
    3. Develop a clear timeline for the overall effort and for each individual component or event.
    4. Design a means of data collection so that you can show the results of your efforts.

10 Steps to Formalizing a Partnership

    (Finkel, n.d.) :

    1. Get your agreement in writing. Yes you're busy, and lawyers are expensive, but if you can't afford the time and money to properly document the partnership, should you really even be entering into it?
    2. Make sure you share common values and vision. Don't just look at the ways you fit, intentionally put on your black hat for a moment and list out all the ways you don't fit, and the reasons you shouldn't partner. This will help you fully think through the fit before you go too far.
    3. Integrity is a MUST in any choice of partners. What evidence do you have of your potential partner's integrity? Of their lack of integrity?
    4. Evaluate your prospective partners past exits from business and personal relationships to see what that reveals about how they will behave if your business relationship ends. While investment prospectuses have to say, "Past behavior is not a guarantee of future performance" with human behavior it is your best clue.
    5. In your written agreement, put the onus on making the partnership work out. Make it less favorable to leave or quit the partnership. This tilts the field to push you both to work things out.
    6. Make sure in your "partnership math" you don't base it on time invested, but rather on value created. Both of you must feel fairly treated or the situation won't work. Divide up the contributions all partners are making to the business and put an equitable value on each of these contributions. Look for external measures of value--what would you have to pay for this contribution on the open market? Rewards and control should follow contribution and risk. If things change over time, your agreement needs to reflect how this will impact profit splits and equity ownership.
    7. Choose the right legal structure at the start of the partnership.
    8. Get your written agreement done during the "honeymoon" stage of the partnership--up front! If you can't get things agreed to in writing when you're "in love", how will you get things equitably split at the end when emotions are high and attorneys are whispering?
    9. Consider doing a "one off" joint venture to see what it's like working together first before you jump into a long term business partnership. In other words, date before you marry.
    10. Incorporate your answers to how to handle the "five D's" in your written partnership agreement up front. (Death, disagreement, debt, divorce, disability).
